Many Benefits of Polished Concrete

by Carla R. Daniels-Fitch

With some advances in grinding technology, creating polished concrete is starting to increase in popularity. Because it never needs to be coated or waxed, unlike a wood floor, it can easily replace other forms, such as: coated concrete, tile, marble, linoleum, granite, and other types of flooring.

Unlike wood, it will never require a waxing or coating. This type of floor can be used almost anywhere, including retail buildings, warehouses, office spaces, and even the typical homeowner's garage. This flooring is very durable, and can be customized in a variety of ways.

Depending on whether the concrete going to be polished is already poured or not determines the available options of design. If it is already poured, it can be colored and dyed. If it is not yet poured, a few other things can be added. Things can be mixed into the concrete before it is poured.

Small objects can be mixed in with the concrete. Anything from computer chips, bolts, glass, or even nails. All will show up in the mixture once it is polished. Lines and graph patterns can be styled into the floor as well.

A company's logo can also be inscribed into the flooring using the coloring and styling methods explained above. Some prefer a large, ting logo, while some merely put one in front of the entrance, in the style of a welcome mat. Others create directional arrows to indicate where to go in confusing sections of the building. There are many different uses for floor customization, not just logos or labels. Any specific design can be implemented.

The price of polishing concrete floors is actually quite cost-effective. The price will go up or down slightly, depending on geographical location. After that, the type of area being polished will have an effect on price. Even though it generally encompasses a smaller area of space, residential areas will typically cost more than a larger, industrial area. Smaller equipment has to be used in a smaller area, which is why industrial areas are usually cheaper per square foot, because the larger equipment is used instead, and it does not have to be worked into tinier spaces.

Even though this floor does not need waxing or coating, some form light cleaning is required, as with most floors. A type of natural cleaner is recommended to maintain the shine. It can be applied with a mop or an auto cleaner, or another form of either one. With this simple upkeep, the floor will last for years and years to come. Areas of the floor that are used the most often will be where the floor starts to lose its shine. However, it can be easily touched up.

One of the factors putting polished concrete floors ahead in the market of commercial flooring is that absolutely no chemicals are involved in its creation or maintenance. No VOCs, polyurethane, or epoxies are used at any point. This makes the floor very environmentally friendly, and a preferred option to many homeowners and businesses.
