Pack Rats - How To Kick This Habit To The Curb

by Gina Parks

Getting rid of their belongings is something pack rats hate to do because they think the time will come when they will once again need those items.

For a pack rat, the main problem would be what to do with all the stuff that they accumulated. To be a good organizer, it's not necessary to get rid of everything that you have and instead, you need to keep things in an organized and orderly fashion so you wouldn't have a hard time finding it if you need to. With organized pack rats, they usually find space in which they are able to store their stuff in one place. But a pack rat who is disorganized can have their family life and mental health suffering as a result because they could become overwhelmed with all their stuff. It's very easy to get depressed and feel blue when it feels as though the clutter is closing in on you.

Things that are truly important are the things that a pack rat should strive to keep and throw away the detritus and every once in a while, it would be a good idea to have a yard sale. If the clutter level is becoming more difficult to manage, then there are some community education programs that offer one-day classes on organizing closets and homes and these would be helpful.

The habit of keeping and hoarding things is a difficult habit to break for a pack rat. If you have a packrat in the family, then help them go through their belongings in order to get a handle in the situation. But it may be time to ask yourself some honest questions if you're the packrat. When it comes to the process of weeding through things, try making it as pleasant as possible. It's possible for you to have a huge yard sale or maybe benefiting greatly from the donation of your unneeded items are some community organization.

Your need to get rid of your excess items and if you are beginning to collect too much stuff, what you can do is work on developing a long term organizational goal that will act as a warning. Try reminding yourself how good you felt after you've gotten rid of the excess items and how hard you worked just to get rid of them in the first place. When you take a picture of your house in after mode, you can take a look at that picture every time you feel like slipping back into your old habits. Keep on top of the clutter so the clutter doesn't overwhelm you in the end again.
