Picking Your Dining Room Suite

by Daniel Akinson

Unlike the furniture in other rooms of a home, the dining room table and chairs are generally subjected to less recreational use and therefore tend to last a lot longer. Therefore, figure out everything you need in a dining suite before you start looking.

These furniture sets come in as wide a variety as the price that is attached to them. If you don't have a lot of space, you can invest in extending or folding tables.

A Bit of Old Fashioned Style

If your tastes lean toward the formal, elegant dining, you might consider period style suites in a solid wood with a smooth veneer finish. If you would like your room to be more versatile, give some thought to what designs and styles would stand up to harder use. The dining room is often used as an area for homework, to pay bills and to do projects so your furniture must be up to the task. If your table is to be used for children's art projects, you might need a table that is easy to clean and difficult to scratch. Or perhaps your family likes to gather for more informal meals, in which case heavy, ornate furniture might not be your best option. If you intend on using your furniture to host formal occasions as well as everything previously listed, you might want to consider a table with a removable leaf that can be inserted to accommodate seating for more guests.

Think about this diversity of use as you search for dining room furniture; keep in mind that you could dress it up with a lovely table line, as opposed to a flimsy veneer that could be easily ruined with the slightest spill or drop. If you insist on a table top that will easily be marred, be sure to invest in a table pad to protect it. When you have your formal occasions, it is a simple matter to remove the padding and replace with the luxurious tablecloth or delicate placemats.

* Contemporary Chic

Modern designs are characterized by their clean, simple lines and uncluttered embellishments. The market is full of chairs and tables with smooth lines. Chrome, steel and glass are great contemporary room options, but provided you have a clean, stylized look, about any material will work just fine.

Modern designs stand up particularly well to use by children as they often come with finishes and laminates that wipe up easily with a damp cloth. Metal frames provide a sturdy surface that accommodates many craft and family uses. Don't try to cover up a modern table, as that will betray the aesthetic, but you can use a unique tablecloth to dress up a conventional table.

Be mindful of materials such as glass if you have children, and make sure that all glass pieces are shatter-proof. If you do not like wiping up finger prints, there are glass finishes that are textured to hide the evidence of little hands. When looking at the chairs for your suite be conscious of comfort and ease of use, those gorgeous chairs with cast-iron are heavy and do not maneuver easily.
